Hold’em is basically HIGH card game. The players holding two good high cards have the best chance at the best hand or a draw to the best hand after the flop. Only play strong hands, that will stand a raise or multiple raises, from early betting positions. Play medium strength and other playable hands from the later positions if you have a good chance of seeing the flop at a reasonable price. Play strong high hands MOST of the time, and play them very aggressively. Take all the raises you can get. If you don’t thin out the competition, you reduce your chances of winning. Plus, your aggressive play before the flop can add credibility to any strong play you might want to use on the next round if a garbage flop falls and you want to try a steal. Be ready to fold your high pair if you get a lot of action with a threatening flop.
Definitions:
HIGH CARDS - A thru 10 (Aces, Faces and Tens)
MEDIUM CARDS - 9 thru 7
LOW CARDS - 6 thru 2
SUITED PLAYER HAND (S) - Both cards of the same suit.
SET - Three of a kind with two of the three in your hand. (One in your hand and two on the board is “trips”.)
NUT HAND - An unbeatable hand. Sometimes called a “lock”.
FLOP, TURN. RIVER - The community cards in the order of distribution. See top illustration.
FAST PLAY - Bet, raise and re-raise to get as many other players out as possible.
SLOW PLAY - Just check or call along to keep other players in the game to increase the pot odds.
CHECK-FOLD - Check when you can and fold if you are bet into. Gladly accept all free cards offered.

In Texas Hold’em, each player is dealt two cards (called the pocket cards). The initial deal is followed by a round of betting. After the first round, all remaining cards are dealt face up and shared by all players. The dealer places three cards face up on the board (called the flop). A second round of betting then takes place. Texas Hold’em is usually a fixed limit game, meaning that there are fixed amounts that a player may bet in each betting round. For example, in a $3 to $6 game, the first two betting rounds are $3 bets while the third and fourth betting rounds are $6 bets. After the second round of betting, the dealer places another card face up on the board (called the turn). A third round of betting then takes place. Finally, the dealer places the last card face up on the board (called the river), and a final round of betting ensues. Each remaining player takes their two pocket cards and combines them with the five community cards to make the best five-card poker hand. The best hand among the players is determined by standard poker hand order.

A rabbit one day managed to break free from the laboratory where he had been born and brought up. As he scurried away from the fencing of the compound, he felt grass under his little feet and saw the dawn breaking for the first time in his life.

In a 10-20 Hold’em game at the Mirage, a drunk was begining to get out of hand.
“Well that was one pussy-pink river card from you dealer!” he bellowed after missing a flush.
The dealer beheld the drunk gravely; “Sir, there is a young lady at the table. If you don’t control your language, you will have to leave.”
On the next hand, the drunk doesn’t improve his set on the flop and looses to a straight. “Jesus Christ! Why don’t you just light my fucking wallet on fire pinhead!”
The dealer was absolutely at his limit; “Sir, I’m telling you for the last time; there is a young lady at the table! Control your language or you will be escorted out of here!”
On the following hand, every player in the game wades into the pot. There are raises and caps on every card. In the end, the drunk sucks out an inside straight and wins the 10-20 pot of the month. The drunk looks out over his pile of chips at the dealer and asks, “Do you boys pool your tips togeather or do you keep them for yourselves?”
The dealer replies “All dealers here keep their own tips.”
The drunk tosses two green chips at the dealer and says with a grin; “Well have a Goddamn toke on me, motherfucker.”
The dealer picks up the $50, turns to the young woman and says, “Miss, I’m afraid you’ll have to leave the table.”

Building a poker table is easier than you think and there is certainly no need to buy plans to build a poker table! Here are my favorite links to homemade poker tables, they all include instructions on how to make a poker table. Most of these tables use one or more 4′ x 8′ sheets of plywood to construct a poker table. Some of these poker tables have rails and some have cup holders. Some tables are covered with poker cloth or billiard felt, others use faux suede or velveteen. Most of these poker table designs have a couple cases of beer included in the parts list. These tables are as individual as the owners themselves!

1. Don’t Play Every Hand / Do Fold More
Probably the number one mistake beginning poker players make is that they play far too many hands. When you’re just starting out playing poker, you want to play poker, and that means staying in hands that aren’t very good just to be part of the action. But playing more doesn’t mean winning more, it usually means losing more. If you find you’re staying in half or more the hands you’re dealt, you need to upgrade your starting hand requirements.
